Akashic Records

A theosophical concept of a non-physical "library" containing the record of every soul's experience across time, said to be accessible in deep contemplative states.

Anointing

The application of consecrated oil to a person or object as a sign of blessing, healing, or setting-apart for sacred use.

Tradition: Universal

Apophatic

Of the "way of unsaying." The contemplative path that approaches God by recognizing what God is not, preferring silence to incomplete speech.

Archon

In gnostic cosmology, one of the spiritual rulers of the lower world that obscures the soul's memory of its true origin.

As Above So Below

The axiom from the Tablet of Emerald: that the patterns of Heaven and the patterns of earth mirror one another, and that to know one is to begin to know the other.

Asperges

The rite of sprinkling a congregation or sacred space with holy water before liturgy, drawn from Psalm 51: "Purge me with hyssop."

Aura

The subtle energetic field said to surround every living being, perceived in colors and intensities by sensitive practitioners.

Ayurveda

The traditional medical science of India, a system of healing built on three doshas (vata, pitta, kapha) and lifelong attention to balance.

Bodhisattva

An awakened being who, out of compassion, vows to remain in the world until all beings are freed from suffering.

Censer

The hanging vessel in which incense is burned during worship.

The rising smoke is read as a visible image of prayer ascending.

Chakra

One of seven (or more) energy centers along the body's central channel, each associated with particular organs, qualities, and practices.

Christ Consciousness

The state of awakened humanity that lives, knows, and loves as Christ does, the inheritance to which every soul is being called.

Cymatics

The visible study of sound made form, patterns produced by frequencies vibrating water, sand, or membrane.

A modern proof of an ancient mystic intuition.

Demiurge

The lesser fashioner of the material world in gnostic and Platonic thought, distinct from the unknowable supreme Source.

Divine Medical Astrology

The traditional reading of the natal chart as a map of the body's strengths and tender places, practiced as a contemplative complement to ordinary medical care, never a replacement.

Ein Sof

Hebrew for "without end." The unknowable, infinite ground of God prior to all manifestation.

Esbat

A lunar gathering, traditionally held at the full moon, devoted to ritual, healing, and the work of the coven.

Esoteric Universalism

The CNE conviction that the world's wisdom traditions, rightly understood, point at one common Light, and may be honored together without being collapsed into one another.

Gnosis

Direct, experiential knowledge of God, distinct from doctrinal belief or intellectual study.

Hermes Trismegistus

The legendary thrice-great teacher to whom the Hermetic writings are attributed.

Sometimes identified with the Egyptian Thoth.

Hesychia

The deep inner stillness sought by the Orthodox hesychast tradition, a quiet of the heart cultivated through breath, prayer, and the slow repetition of the name of Jesus.

Karma

The principle that intentional actions ripen into corresponding consequences for the doer, across this life or beyond.

Tradition: Buddhism / Hinduism

Logos

The divine Word, Reason, or Pattern through which the cosmos is ordered.

Identified in the Gospel of John with the eternal Christ.

Magnum Opus

The "Great Work", the alchemist's lifelong project of transmuting base matter (or the unrefined self) into gold (or the awakened soul).

Mantra

A sacred sound, syllable, or short phrase repeated as a vehicle of meditation and transformation.

Tradition: Hinduism / Buddhism

Mudra

A symbolic hand gesture used in meditation, ritual, and iconography to focus and channel the body's energy.

Tradition: Hinduism / Buddhism

Pendulum

A weight on a cord used to receive yes/no answers from the body's subtle responses; a tool for dowsing and reflection.

Tradition: Divination

Plant Spirit

The teaching that each plant carries an animating spirit that may be related to in prayer, addressed in ritual, and learned from over time.

Tradition: Indigenous / Sacred Herbalism

Pleroma

The "fullness" of divine being, the realm of the eternal aeons from which the soul has come and to which it is returning.

Tradition: Gnostic Christianity

Pneuma

Greek for "breath" or "spirit." The animating breath of the Divine in scripture, philosophy, and the contemplative tradition.

Prana

The vital life-breath that animates all living things.

Cognate with the Greek pneuma and the Hebrew ruach.

Reiki

A Japanese hands-on healing tradition that channels universal life-energy through the practitioner to the recipient.

Sabbat

One of the eight solar festivals on the Wheel of the Year, marking the turning of the seasons.

Sacred Geometry

The study of recurring mathematical forms, the circle, the spiral, the Flower of Life, read as the language in which creation is written.

Sacred Herbalism

The study and use of plants in their full spiritual context, as ritual partners, as medicine, and as living teachers of patience and presence.

Scrying

The contemplative practice of gazing into a reflective surface, water, mirror, crystal, to receive inner imagery and intuitive guidance.

Tradition: Divination / Universal

Sephirah / Sephiroth

One of the ten emanations through which the unknowable Ein Sof reveals itself in Kabbalistic theology.

Together they form the Tree of Life.

Shekinah

The dwelling presence of God in the world, often spoken of as feminine, the divine glory that fills temple, tabernacle, and the human heart.

Tradition: Kabbalah / Judaism

Smudging

The cleansing of a person or space with the smoke of sacred herbs.

Used reverently and with awareness of its indigenous lineage.

Solve et Coagula

Latin for "dissolve and coagulate." The alchemical motto for the soul's work: break what is false, then rebuild what is true.

Tradition: Alchemy

Sophia

The Holy Wisdom of God, feminine, generative, present at creation.

Honored in Eastern Orthodoxy and in the gnostic gospels alike.

Tablet of Emerald

A short, ancient text attributed to Hermes Trismegistus, source of the famous Hermetic axiom "As above, so below."

Tarot

A 78-card deck whose images map the soul's journey through archetype, suit, and the Tree of Life.

Used for reflection and spiritual counsel.

The Great Work

Synonymous with the Magnum Opus, the long, patient inner labor of becoming what one was made to be.

Theosis

The doctrine that the human soul, by grace, is being transformed into the likeness of God.

The goal of the Christian life as the East has always understood it.

Theurgy

The art of "divine work", ritual practices intended not to bend the gods to human will but to lift the practitioner into participation with the Divine.

Tradition: Hermeticism / Neoplatonism

Tree of Life

The diagram of ten Sephiroth and twenty-two paths through which Kabbalists map the structure of reality and the soul's ascent.

Tradition: Kabbalah

Watchers

The class of angelic beings described in the Book of Enoch as having descended to earth and taught humanity arts both sacred and forbidden.

Wheel of the Year

The annual cycle of eight seasonal festivals, solstices, equinoxes, and the four cross-quarter days, kept by many earth-honoring traditions.
